The patience to make wise choices

Daily writing prompt
What’s one thing you wish you had started doing earlier in life?

Being patient is very difficult for a child or a young person. When a baby arrives to the world, there’s too much to catch up on!

From the first remembered moment, a child hears many fantastic stories and ideas. School is a rush of finding out in a few short years many lifetimes of information interpreted through the lenses of a dozen generations.

I wish childhood could be less of a hurry to cram information in. Children could learn patience if the first several years were spent learning about life itself. Spending time with nature study would introduce a toddler to the days of waiting of the phoebe bird for the hatching chicks. Children would feel better anchored by planting seeds and checking each day til the sprouts appear. How uplifted would an elementary aged child feel if the main lessons of those years focused on carefully observing the life cycles of the seasons turning around them.

At some point, children should be introduced to the awful and the amazing stories of human activities and the results, but maybe not so much stuffed in quickly before a child has the chance to feel alive in the world.

If there was one helpful tool that would have helped me make better decisions at each decision point in life, patience and unhurried honest consideration of the options is what I would choose.

As a child and youth, I felt compelled by the information I learned to rush at life without proper wisdom. Truthfully, I can be patient and not anxious based on my faith in God and the plan Jesus completed to rescue us from the awful results of the hasty foolish decisions of humanity.
